Facilities, Services and Activities
Lounge and Kitchen
The basement houses a lounge on the main floor, complete with TV, three comfy couches and assorted games. Next to the lounge is a well stocked kitchen where lunch is prepared at cost price for all comers between 11:30 and 1:30 PM. Every weekday Monday through Friday. We have fully renovated our basement/kitchen space. Come visit us and be pleasantly surprised!
Main Floor
The main floor serves as the focal point of house activities. It is used for both weekend Masses as well as for the meals and activities following. During the week, the area is used as a classroom for courses (Newman Institute of Catholic Studies) A reading room complete with a reasonably wide collection of books of theology, philosophy and Church history is also available for you to use. The Secretary is also situated in this area of the Centre and is eagerly waiting to greet you and answer any questions you may have. Groups may also reserve the main floor for private or public gatherings.
Second Floor: Chapel, Offices, Claude Ryan Room
The second floor houses a cozy Chapel for weekday Masses, prayer meetings and private adoration. The offices of the Director, Chair of Catholic Studies, Campus Minister, Effie and Father Clark (Catholic) occupy this floor. The Claude Ryan room houses Mr. Ryan's personal library (donated to the Centre).
Third Floor Study Room and Residences
The third floor is furnished with a quiet study room and small reading area. These rooms are open to all students upon request in times of high demand. This floor also provides living quarters for three residents, selected on a year-to-year basis.
Newman Coach House
The Coach house (located at the rear of the Newman Centre property) houses several residents. It is a quaint structure and is entirely segregated from the activity of the main house. Residents for this location of the Centre are also selected on a year-to-year basis.

Activities at Newman Centre
So What Do We Do?
There are several activities organized by the Newman Student Society. One of more members of the Community Council coordinate each activity.
Saturday Night Supper
Cost is a mere $3.50, but this is waived if you choose instead to cook for the hungry multitudes (and you win a special prize if you don't trip the fire alarm during Mass). Seriously speaking though, it's a lot of fun and a great way to meet interesting people.
Social Activities
Because of our Catholic heritage, the Newman Centre is a well established party centre. Our proximity to Crescent Street and Mount Royal Park makes us the ideal place for folks to hang out and join the fun. There is always some sort of activity planned throughout the course of the academic year. Whether it be Salsa Night, Movie Night, or any other organized event, our activities come with a supply of friendship, laughter and fun.
Community Outreach
The Newman Centre is involved in several projects aimed at serving the disadvantaged in the downtown community. These include :
Meals on Wheels, L'Arche, Pro-Life, Father Dowd Home, Soups Kitchens (Old Brewery Mission, St. Michaels Mission, Benedict Labre House, Welcome Hall Mission), Toy Drive, Tutoring, CKUT Community Radio, Hospital Volunteering, Chaplaincy and Interfaith Activities.
Prayer Life at Newman
Every year we offer an opportunity to learn about Spiritual Direction. We run what is called "In Your Apartment Retreat". For eight weeks students have a chance to have a weekly spiritual direction with a qualified director. This program runs prior to lent and continues until Easter week.
Bible Studies
We run a Bible Study every semester. For 2006-2007, the program will run weekly. Please contact the Newman Centre for additional information.
