Dominus Vobiscum (DV) Retreat Centre serves the English-speaking Catholic community. Its mission is to provide support for couples facing the challenges of marriage and family life in these difficult times. Our marriage enrichment program draws upon the resources of well-recognized religious and secular marriage education programs. A recent news article on retreat centres "with a difference" spotlights the unique outreach of DV to married couples and their families. (See "In Search of Silence," Gazette Aug., 2008.)
The retreat centre occupies the historic Orelda-Marian camp originally founded by Fathers O'Rourke, Elliott, and Dawson in 1930. This wonderful site has served the Montreal English Catholic Community for over 80 years. In 1998, the Newman Centre in collaboration with the Foundation of Catholic Community Services launched a major project to rebuild this important facility and to rededicate it to the mission of supporting marriage and family.
DV Testimonials
DV was a turning point in our lives. We had arrived at DV five years ago, after a prolonged difficult period in our lives . . . . At DV, we shared our stories as couples, and we realized we were not alone. The very good information and support from the very kind people leading the camp and the sharing with other couples helped us to see the end of the tunnel. The DV Retreat Centre is truly God's providence. The beauty of nature, the community spirit with like-minded families, the deeply inspiring Masses and worship in the Chapel, and the enthusiasm and tireless work of the DV staff make the camp a very real piece of God's Kingdom. We keep going back every year to recharge our batteries. (S.&P.)
For the two of us, it provided an opportunity to draw closer to each other and build up our marriage. For our family, it was a week that drew us all closer together and closer to God. The Lord has blessed DV with an important mission that is needed in our world today. The combination of spiritual nourishment along with fun and relaxation in a beautiful setting provides a resting spot in our secular world where we could experience as a family the spirit of Nazareth. (S.&S.)
