Through research, conferences, publishing, and instruction, the Newman Institute of Catholic Studies has been a vital contributor to the intellectual life of the Newman Centre and of McGill University since it was founded in the year 2000. An independent body with its own Board of Governors, its main objectives are to initiate and undertake programs of education and research in accordance with the purposes of the Newman Association of Montreal, particularly to promote greater knowledge of the Catholic intellectual tradition, and also to foster and support the Chair in Catholic Studies and the Minor in Catholic Studies at McGill University. The Institute also maintains a firm commitment to promoting programs which serve the advancement of ecumenical dialogue in a pluralistic milieu.
In the year 2000, Mr. Podles and the Podles family made a generous donation to the Newman Association of Montreal Inc. in order to further the study of the Catholic intellectual tradition. They also set up an endowment with McGill University to establish the Kennedy Smith Chair in Catholic Studies and the Minor program in Catholic Studies. The Claude Ryan Library is the office of the Kennedy Smith Chair in Catholic Studies.
The Newman Institute is a registered charity that relies on donations for the furtherance of its mission. For more information on the Institute’s activities, upcoming events, or on how to make a donation, please contact Dr. Daniel Cere: email@example.com.
